Govt rules out special category status to Andhra Pradesh

The government has ruled out giving special category status to Andhra Pradesh. Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh said in the Rajya Sabha today that there is no proposal to grant special status to any state in the country. <br/><br/>He was replying to a Calling Attention matter raised by Dr. K V P Ramachandra Rao of the Congress on the need for convening a meeting of National Development Council (NDC) to discuss the necessity for continuance of the concept of Special Category Status. <br/><br/>The Minister said NDC was a body to look after development issues of national as well as States including Special Category Status to states for Plan assistance during the regime of Planning Commission. He said following dissolution of NDC, the Centre is providing Revenue Deficit Grants to eligible states, which have not come under special category status.<br/><br/>He said Uttarakhand is the last state to get special category status. The Minister said the NDA government has done away with the Planning Commission. Initiating the discussion Dr K V P Ramchandra Rao said the Centre had promised the special category status to Andhra Pradesh after its bifurcation in 2014.
