Communications and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today ruled out any health hazards from the radiation emitted by mobile towers and handsets. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, he said the World Health Organisation in a report has mentioned that there is no adverse effect on health of human beings from the mobile towers. He allayed members' apprehensions about any health risks from these towers and handsets. He also said that the installation of mobile towers is essential to overcome the problem of call drops.<br/><br/>Mr Prasad however said audit carried out by Telecom Enforcement Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cells, 108 number of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been found exceeding the prescribed Electro Magnetic Frequency (EMF) limits. He said, penalty amounting to over six crore rupees on telecom service providers have imposed for exceeding the EMF limits. <br/><br/>Mr Prasad said the government in the last two years has played a very pro-active role in encouraging the spread of both telecom services and manufacturing of telecom equipments in the country. He informed the Lok Sabha that the government hopes to achieve growth on multiple fronts with the Digital India programme. The minister said the telecom services have registered growth in all components. Mr Prasad said rural telephone connections has registered 6.23 per cent growth where as in urban area it has registered 5.23 per cent growth in till February in 2015-16.
