Government on Thursday ruled out deregulation of diesel prices. Talking to reporters in New Delhi the Petroleum Minister Mr. Jaipal Reddy said that it is not politically and practically feasible. He said, the government has taken several decisions to check adulteration and pilferation of kerosene. They include reintroduction of a marker system within six months, introduction of GPS for tankers and online information. Mr. Reddy had convened a high level meeting to take stock of the situation in the backdrop of the killing of Additional District Magistrate of Malegaon Yashwant Sonawane allegedly by oil mafia. The Petroleum Minister said that there is a need to deal with this problem effectively in a systemic manner and the state governments have to play an important role in this direction. While strongly condemning Sonawane's killing, Mr Reddy announced that oil marketing companies have decided to provide an ex-gratia payment of 25 lakh rupees to the family of the deceased.
