Ministry of Road Transport and Highways today released the new format for recording and reporting road accident data. Addressing media in New Delhi, Senior Advisor of Transport Reseach Wing in the Ministry Kirti Saxena said, the uniform format has been drawn on the lines of developed countries and will require the police, transport department and other agencies concerned to factor in circumstances such as road conditions, visibility, signage and weather that led to an accident and not merely putting the blame on the driver.

She said, the ministry has sent letters to all state police and transport departments on the format. She said, the concerned authorities will have to furnish five-point information regarding every accident, which will be monitored centrally. The points include the site of accident, details of vehicles involved, weather condition, victims' details and nature of mishap.

Designed by a high-level committee set up by the transport research wing of the ministry comprising senior officials and experts from IITs and World Health Organization. Committee members Dr Geetam Tiwari of IIT Delhi and Dr Sudeshna Mitra of IIT Kharagpur said, the committee recommended a uniform accident-recording format to be adopted by police in all the states and union territories and to furnish the annual road accident data in the new reporting formats.

Indian roads see 1,374 accidents and 400 deaths every day, which translates into 57 accidents and 17 deaths every hour on an average.
