The Government has rejected opposition demand for a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the issue of price rise through an adjournment motion, which entails voting. The short-duration discussion on the issue is likely to take place in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal told reporters that the government is not afraid to face any motion but its objection to discussion through adjournment motion is on the matters of principles.

Opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, met Speaker Meira Kumar on the issue. Besides Swaraj and CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, others present in the meeting included Basudeb Acharia of CPI-M, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. Earlier, BJP Spokesman Gopinath Munde said that it will not allow the Lok sabha to run, if adjournment motion is not admitted. The party leader S.S Ahluwalia alleged that the presidential address is insensitive to the concerns of the common man as there is neither any road map nor any mention of the time frame to contain price rise.

The Congress spokesman, Mr. Abhishek Singhvi, on the other hand said that the President in her address has said that the government gives the highest importance to ensuring relief to the common man on food prices and has spelt out measures to control them.
