The Government today rejected the opposition claim that votes were purchased by the then UPA to win the trust vote in 2008. Participating in a short duration discussion on cash for votes issue in the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal charged the BJP with leveling wild allegations against the government. Quoting extensively from the report of the Parliamentary Panel that probed the matter, he said, the sting operation done by a TV Channel was stage-managed. He also named some people with BJP leanings behind this operation. Referring to Prime Minister's statement on the subject, Bansal reiterated that the Parliamentary Committee concluded that there was insufficient evidence to draw any conclusion on the cash for votes issue. He also charged the opposition of holding the parliament hostage by disrupting the proceedings on the issue.Earlier, the BJP demanded a CBI probe into the alleged cash for votes scam. The leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj also demanded filing of fresh FIRs against those who have been named by the Parliamentary panel that probed the matter. Strongly criticizing the Prime Minister's statement, Swaraj said that an electoral victory cannot condone any criminal offence. She claimed that the tapes about the alleged scam have been found genuine after the forensic tests.Initiating the debate, the CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta alleged that the recommendations by the Parliamentary panel were not taken forward deliberately to save some political managers and business persons.
