Home Minister, P Chidambaram has strongly refuted the allegations that the former Union Carbide Chief Warren Anderson was granted safe passage under US pressure. Countering the charge of inaction in the Bhopal gas leak case, Home Minister said the opposition parties should have raised questions on the tragedy in 2001 when they were in the government. Replying to a short duration discussion on Bhopal gas disaster in the Rajya Sabha, he said that the statement of then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Arjun Singh had foiled the intentions of the opposition to show the involvement of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the case. Mr. Chidambaram said, Mr Arjun Singh made it clear that it was his own decision to arrest Anderson. Quoting from his statement, he said that there were calls from the Union Home Ministry for his release. Mr Chidambaram, however, said there are no records available beyond this. The Home Minister admitted that both the executive and the political class failed to take the case with seriousness in all these years and if any action was taken it was at the behest of judicial intervention.
