The government has brought down customs duty on imports of onion to zero from five per cent. Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla told this to reporters in New Delhi. Government has already taken a series of measures to contain the prices of the onions. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has asked states to bring down prices of onion. Dr Singh called for monitoring of prices on a day to day basis. The agriculture minister Sharad Pawar after a high level meeting yesterday told reporters those prices of onions will moderate within next two to three weeks. Nafed and other government trading agencies are selling onion in the national capital between 35 to 40 rupees a kilo in their retail outlets. Delhi government has also asked concerned agencies to take strict action against hoarders. According to an official press release, the wholesale prices of onion both in Nasik and Azadpur market have declined by 35 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.
