The Prime Minister has called upon all countrymen, particularly, people of Jammu and Kashmir and North-East, to adopt democratic means for resolution of issues and join hands with government for their own and the country's welfare. He was addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort after unfurling the national tri-colour on the 64th Independence Day this morning. Recalling his recent talks with political parties from Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Manmohan Singh said, it will be his endeavour to take this process forward.The Prime Minister asserted that the dialogue process cannot make any progress with Pakistan unless terrorism emanating from its territory ends. He underlined that India wants prosperity, peace and harmony with its neighboring countries.Dr. Manmohan Singh reiterated that the government is ready to talk to every person or group which abjures violence and deeply regretted the loss of lives in the cycle of violence. He said, centre will provide all possible help to State Governments to maintain the rule of law in areas affected by naxalism.Admitting that poor people are the worst hit due to rising food prices, the Prime Minister said, the government is making every effort to control inflation. He however defended the recent hike in petroleum prices saying India imports nearly 80 per cent of its requirement and the subsidy was increasing every year.Dr. Singh extended his heart-felt condolences to the families who lost their kith and kin in the Ladakh floods recently. He said the entire country is with the people of Ladakh and assured that government will do everything possible for the rehabilitation of the affected people.
