Govt ready for unconditional talks with Maoists: Chidambaram

The government today said that it wants a simple statement from the CPI Maoist saying that they will abjure violence and are prepared for talks. The Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram said that there should be no ifs, no buts and no conditions. He said that once such a statement is received by him, he will consult the Prime Minister and other colleagues and respond promptly. An official spokesman said in New Delhi today that the government has seen many versions of a statement reportedly made by the leaders of the CPI Maoist. He said that in the absence of an authentic statement, government is unable to respond to these versions, but is reacting to clear the air. Earlier, the CPI Maoist had offered a 72 day conditional offer of ceasefire.
