The government today said country has reached a milestone in power production by adding 9585 Mega Watt in 2009, which is a record in the last six decades. Speaking at the fourth power minister's conference in New Delhi, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the government is very keen of its promise of power for all by 2012. <br/><br/>He said the capacity addition target for the 12th plan is still to be finalized and the ministry is looking at targeting one lakh mega watt power addition.<br/><br/>The Minister said that his ministry has recently launched a scheme for electrification of villages within five Kilometers periphery of all public sector power plants. Mr Shinde said free electricity connections would be provided to the BPL families in that area. The Minster said under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana, over 79 thousand villages in the country have already been electrified.<br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion, Planning Commission deputy chairman Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that losses in transmission and distribution in power sector would exceed 45,000 crore rupees for the fiscal ended March 31st this year. He said, unless tariffs are raised, losses in 2010-11 may be 68,000 crore rupees.<br/><br/>He said, the Planning Commission would set up an independent group of financial experts to study the distribution losses. <br/>
