The government proposes to use Geographical Information System (GIS) under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The Rural Development Ministry has set up an Expert Group to prepare a strategy for nationwide rollout and to evolve parameters for standardization with the objective to link GIS with grass root participatory planning and asset management and monitoring. Giving this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Rural Development, Mr Pradeep Jain, said the use of GIS will strengthen decentralized participatory planning, implementation, capturing and monitoring of asset and evaluation of the works under MGNREGS. In reply to another question, the Rural Development Minister, Dr C P Joshi said the government does not propose to extend the benefits of new pension scheme for workers of the unorganised sector to the beneficiaries under MGNREGS. Dr Joshi said his ministry has received complaints alleging corruption in the implementation of works and diversion of funds under the MGNREGS in various states. He said the government has taken several measures to check preparation of fake muster rolls and embezzlement of funds.
