Government has proposal to amend certain personal laws regarding divorce and lower the separation period to one year to become eligible for divorce on mutual consent. <br/><br/>In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Law Minister Sadanand Gowda said, the government has proposed to amend the Divorce Act 1869 to decrease the period from two years to one year to bring uniformity in the minimum mandatory period of separate residence. <br/><br/>As per existing provision, a couple has to stay separately for a period of two years before filing a petition for dissolution of marriage by mutual consent.
