Govt proposes for creation of 6-lakh tonnes storage capacity for foodgrains

The government has sent a proposal to the Planning Commission for the creation of about six lakh tonnes storage capacity for foodgrains in the country.Replying to a calling attention notice raised Venkaiah Naidu of BJP and others, the minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution Sharad Pawar said an amount of 568 crore rupees is required for the purpose. He assured the members that the ministry is taking effective measures for improving storage facilities and reducing losses to foodgrains.The minister admitted of reports of damaged foodgrains in the godowns of Food Corporation of India in several states. He, however, pleaded with the members that the damaged quantity must be seen in the perspective of total quantity handled. He said as on July 1st this year the stocks of foodgrains in the central pool was 57.85 million tonnes which is three times of foodgrains compared to 2006.
