Government is preparing a roadmap to reach the goal of Zero Disposal of Hazardous Waste by adopting a holistic approach. This was revealed by Science and Technology Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal while addressing an international conference in New Delhi today.Stating that the hazardous waste generation in the country will increase substantially in the coming years he called for customised technologies to address the specific needs of different industries. Mr Bansal said that the new policy will aim to reduce waste originating at source, alongwith emphasis on reuse, recycle and recovery through infusion of cost-effective innovative technologies, processes and practices. He added that rational utilization of natural resources and their protection from toxic releases is vital for sustainable socio-economic development. He said that rapid industrialization has led to the depletion and pollution of precious natural resources, besides generation of huge quantities of hazardous wastes. He elaborated that currently around 30,000 industries in the country generate over six million tonnes of hazardous waste per annum.
