Govt : Policy to be formulated to restrict deceptive, misleading advertisements

The government today said that a policy will be formulated soon to restrict deceptive, unfair, false and misleading advertisements. Consumer Affairs, Food and Public distribution Minister K V Thomas said this in New Delhi while inaugurating the 5th and final seminar on Impact of misleading Advertisements on consumers. He said an advisory committee will suggest the ways to curb the misleading advertisement on the basis of this seminar and 4 other seminars held at regional levels. Mr Thomas said, advertising standards and self regulation by the advertising industry is an important issue, particularly in India, where a majority of the consumers are in rural areas. AIR correspondent reports that at regional seminars held many observations were made. These include amendment to Consumer Protection Legislation so that Consumers Affairs ministry get power to establish investigation machinery to know the truth and put in place stricter provisions to control misleading advertisements.
