Govt plans to sell wheat at Rs 2, rice at Rs 3 per kg to BPL families

The government plans to sell wheat at 2 rupees a kg and rice at 3 rupees per kg to families below poverty line through ration shops. Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Monday, Food Minister KV Thomas said, the discussions are going on with the Agriculture and Finance Ministries to implement the proposal under the Food Bill with regard to BPL families even before the passage of the Bill in Parliament. Mr Thomas said the step will help the Central as well as the state governments to gear up for implementation of the proposed bill, once it is passed by the Parliament. At present, the government provides 35 kg of wheat/rice in a month through ration shops to 6.52 crore families at 4.15 rupees per kg and 5.65 rupees per kg respectively.
