Government plans to convert the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the national capital into a football hub soon. This was revealed by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ajay Maken in New Delhi on Thursday. Addressing the South Asian Football Federation Seminar, Mr Maken said that his Ministry will utilise the huge infrastructure developed during the Commonwealth Games to promote sports in the country. The JLN Stadium which hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games last year, will also be used for athletics. Mr Maken added that the 79 training centres run by Sports Authority of India and twelve other centres of excellence across the country will also be used to impart football training to young and emerging players. Stating that the government is committed to promote football in the country, Mr Maken said that football has been shifted to the priority category to enable allocation of more funds for its development.
