Govt orders inquiry into leakage of Howitzer gun trail report

The government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged leakage of the secret report that contained assessment of the trial of artillery guns by the army. India proposes to procure ultra-light M-777 field guns from the US. Talking to newsmen in New Delhi today, Defence Minister A.K.Antony expressed confidence that nobody will be able to manipulate procurement procedures. Sounding a note of caution, he said due to increasing competition in defence deals, the armed forces need to be very careful during acquisition processes.AIR correspondent reports, the Army proposes to procure 145 M-777 Ultra-Light 155 mm Howitzers from the US under an inter-governmental agreement. This will mark the first deal of the artillery gunships that India has entered into in 25 years after the Bofors gun deal.The field trials of the American howitzer have been carried out at various places including Leh, Sikkim besides the desert and plain areas also. Sources said, the trials are yet to becompleted.There are two contenders for the deal. The deal is critical for Army's 20,000 crore rupees artillery modernisation plans.
