The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mrs. Ambika Soni on Friday said, the Government is not in favour of censorship for the media. Mrs. Ambika Soni said this in New Delhi on Friday after giving away the International Press Institute, India Chapter Award for Excellence in Journalism-2011, jointly to Tehelka and The Week magazines. She said, the government is against any content regulation and would favour self regulation by the media to address issues of public debate including credibility, objectivity of reports, trial by media and the paid news phenomenon.
Mrs. Soni said, the Government is working for a positive outcome for strengthening the self regulatory mechanism for the media. Pointing out that there is an incredible India awaiting to be reported upon, Mrs. Soni said, the media has also the responsibility to re-impose the positive spirit of country.
Replying to a question on agitations, Mrs. Soni said, one is free and it is a right to take up causes to which one is committed. She said that it applies not only to a person like Anna Hazare but also to every citizen of the country.
