The Government has not taken any decision on making the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) a multi-member body.
This information was given by Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. The Minister said the Shunglu Committee has suggested enlarging the CAG from a single-member body to a three-member body to ensure greater transparency in its operation. The minister informed that the Committee suggested that one member should possess professional accounting qualifications, CA or its transnational equivalent.
The Shunglu Committee also suggested annual audit plan should be discussed by CAG with the Public Accounts Committee, PAC. It also suggested that the CAG accounts should be audited by a professional Auditor appointed by the PAC.
The Minister said the measures suggested by V K Shunglu, Chairman, High Level Committee for Commonwealth Games, were sent to Prime Minister on 29th of March last year.
