The government has clarified that the new Companies Bill is not going to make spending on Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, activities mandatory for companies. Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily told reporters at the National CSR Conclave in New Delhi today that there is some misconception among the public that CSR will be mandatory. Moily further said the government's initiatives on CSR are strong enough and this is the first time in the world that companies have been mandated to constitute a board for formulating CSR policies. An official release said, the Minister called for making country's growth more inclusive, a growth that benefits all regions and all sections of the society, particularly the poor and the under-privileged. He said the corporates can bring in social progress and get support from the society when they make use of the resources, expertise and innovative techniques that would benefit the society.
