Govt mulls regulator for private TV channels

The government is considering to set up a Regulatory body on the lines of Press Council to monitor telecast of private TV channels. The issue will come up for discussion at the biennial conference of State Information Ministers' (SIMCON) in New Delhi on Saturday. This was disclosed by the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Mohan Jatua while talking to AIR Kolkata correspondent Arijit Chakrobarty. He said that the Government is thinking of such a body in the wake of concern expressed by the Members in the Parliament and different individuals on the telecast of private channels. However, Mr. Jatua clarified that Government has no intention to impose any unilateral restrictions but desires to have consensus disciplinary mechanism involving all concerned.
