Govt. may amend Open Access Electricity Act: Power Minister

The Government says it may amend the Open Access Electricity Act to ensure uninterrupted transmission of power from one state to another. The power minister Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde while addressing 9th Green Energy Summit in New Delhi, said that his ministry will take the step as a last resort if its policy of persuasion fails to convince the States. Mr Shinde said that the target for the current plan has been reduced to 60,000 Mega watts. He said the delay in the clearance of projects and availability of funds led to reduction of the target. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the function, the Power minister said that 64,000 villages have been electrified so far under Rajiv Gandhi Vidyuti Karan Yojana. The minister said that all power PSUs have been asked to expedite the process so that the objective of power for all is achieved in the stipulated time. He said, bottlenecks are being removed from acquiring raw material and other things for the power projects and now NTPC will directly import coal from abroad. Mr Shinde said the self sufficiency in power sector is imperative for the speedy development of the country. AIR correspondent reports the two-day summit has been organised by the India Energy Forum to concentrate on micro level practical issues which need urgent solutions. Government has embarked on an ambitious plan to tap non-conventional sources of energy including solar and wind apart from the nuclear power to provide green energy to the country.
