Govt may allow more sugar exports

The Government will consider allowing more exports of sugar in the current marketing year. Talking to media persons on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi today, Food and Consumer Affairs minister K V Thomas said that the idea of allowing more exports of the sweetener will be considered in the coming Empowered Group of Ministers, EGoM, meeting.

Mr. Thomas said that since the production is good, the Government is not against allowing some more quantity of sugar exports. Production is expected to increase from 24.67 million tonnes to 25.5 million tonnes this year. The minister said as per the data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, production of sugar next year is expected to be at the current year's level.
