Govt launches policy to promote green cover along National Highways

Government yesterday launched Green Highways policy to promote greening of Highway corridors with participation of of farmers, private sector and government institutions. Launching the scheme, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in New Delhi that the scheme is a step towards creating clean, green, and pollution free India. <br/><br/>The Minister hoped that the policy will strike a balance between highways development and environmental protection. Mr Gadkari said, this will help in providing employment to 5 lakh people of the rural areas. The Minister emphasised on the transparency during the tree plantation and said advance technology will be used to monitor plantation.<br/><br/>The Minister said, one per cent of the total project cost of all highways projects will be kept aside for the highway plantation and its maintenance. He said that about Rs 1000 crore per year will be available for plantation purpose. Mr Gadkari also asked the state governments to start programmes on similar lines. He said that 1200 road side amenities will also be established.
