Govt launch programme to reduce energy consumption of major industries

The Government is planning to launch a "Performance Achieve Trade" programme to reduce energy consumption of major industries.Speaking at the National conference on demand side management in the capital on Tuesday, power Secretary Mr. P.Uma Shankar said that the programme would help reduce energy consumption by as much as four per cent over the next three years.He said, that the programme would first focus on eight high power consuming industries including steel, cement, thermal power plants, pulp and paper, textile and fertiliser.Mr. Uma Shankar said that the government is looking at various initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce distribution losses which are estimated to be around 30 per cent. In the 12th Five-Year Plan targets to have a capacity addition of about 1,00,000 MW in the power sector.
