Govt justifies Delhi Police refusal to Anna’s indefinite fast

The Government today justified the denial of permisssion by Delhi Police to Anna Hazare for holding indefinite fast at Jai Prakash Park in New Delhi in absence of undertaking by his team. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters in New Delhi that law of the land is equal for all and even political parties have to take permission for holding agitations. Replying to questions on Anna team's contention that its right to protest cannot be taken away, Soni said everybody has right to protest but permission has to be sought keeping in mind law and order and other factors.She dismissed allegation that the police set conditions on them at the behest of politicians. She said any person making such allegation is deliberately trying to mislead.Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said in Delhi that everything has to be within the rule of law. He said major gathering in the present circumstances can not be allowed if it is uncontrolled.The police's move to reject the application came soon after the Hazare team submitted an undertaking leaving six out of the 22 conditions laid out by Delhi Police for granting permission for the fast at the Jai Prakash Narain Park near Ferozeshah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary R K Singh held a meeting with Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta in New Delhi to take stock of the measures taken by the force to tackle any untoward situation.
