Govt issues an advisory for Indian students in Australia cautioning them against assaults

The government has issued an important advisory for the Indian students studying in Australia, cautioning them against incidents of assaults on Indians and increase in violence. The advisory comes in the wake of the fatal stabbing of the 21 year old Nitin Garg in Melbourne on Saturday. The advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs says that such incidents continue to occur despite the steps taken by the local police to check them. Pointing to the rise in the incidents of assaults on Indians and robberies, the advisory says that not only the students but the larger Indian community has been affected. The students have been asked to take precautions and remain alert about their security while moving around. The precautions include not travelling alone late in the night, not carrying cash more than required and getting in touch with the officials responsible for students welfare in the High Commission or Consulate in case of a complaint.
