Terming food inflation as unacceptably high, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said, government is trying its best to control it along with the cooperation of state governments. He informed that a meeting of the State Finance Ministers has been convened on Wednesday to discuss ways to rein in the rising food prices.Food inflation fell for the first time in six weeks to 16.91 per cent for the week ended January 1, but still remains high as vegetables like onion, and protein-based items turned expensive. Rising food prices also pushed up overall inflation for December to 8.43 per cent, from 7.48 per cent in the previous month.Mr Mukherji said, inflation is an economic phenomenon which may have monetary factors behind it. He said it could be caused by mismatch between demand and supply or international scenario such as crude prices. Mr. Mukherjee said in the event of wide fluctuation in global petroleum prices, no amount of domestic policy measures could drastically bring it down. The finance minister said he himself had written letters to states asking them to remove supply bottlenecks in food products.In a related development, the Prime Minister's economic panel today said, it favoured some tightening of money supply by RBI later this month in case the prices do not come down. Chairman of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, C Rangarajan said, unless there is some substantial decline in the food prices in the next two weeks, some tightening may be required. The Reserve Bank will hold its quarterly monetary policy review meeting on January 25. Meanwhile, Union Minister of state for Agriculture and Public Distribution, K V Thomas today said in New Delhi that enough food stocks are available in the country and Centre is framing a mechanism with the state governments to ensure the food availability to the people. He added that government is amending the current food export policy and has taken strict actions against the hoarders and black marketers to reign in inflation.
