Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said ten percent growth is a challenging figure and it will depend on how the world is moving apart from domestic factors. Addressing HT leadership summit in New Delhi this afternoon, Mr Jaitley said, reforms are taking place in India structurally and each reform has a particular direction. Mr Jaitley said, policy decisions taken by government have integrated the Indian economy globally.

He said, domestic savings was what people in India relied on in the absence of an adequate social security mechanism. On a question, the Finance Minister said, India will eventually have to fall back on domestic demand. On taxation, Mr Jaitley said, India is the only country in the world to offer a five per cent tax rate to nudge people to come within the tax base. On GST, he said, the barriers are gone and there is one market in the country.

He said, if the government have come up with low GST rate initially, it would have had an inflationary impact. Mr Jaitley said, government is concentrating on the Small and Medium Enterprises, informal and the unorganized sectors for employment generation.

He said, the government inherited a banking system that was full of Non-Performing Assets and the ability to support the banks to grow was restricted. Mr Jaitley said, the Centre will now give more focus to rural India and infrastructure and there will be more spending in the areas.
