The government is very closely monitoring the progress of the projects concerning the Commonwealth Games.Replying to supplementaries in the Rajya Sabha, sports minister Dr M S Gill said a Group of Ministers headed by Urban Development minister S Jaipal Reddy is keeping track of the progress. Referring to allegations of corruption, the minister said anyone found to be guilty will not be spared. Sharing concern of the members, Dr Gill said all efforts are being made to ensure successful completion of the mega event. Raising the issue through a short notice question, Prakash Javedkar of BJP demanded a JPC into the entire gamut of corruption charges. Brinda Karat of CPI(M) wanted to know whether government is prepared to have an independent probe into the matter.Nominated member Mani Shanker Aiyar underlined the need for to set up a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of Dr Gill.The BJP today demanded a thorough probe into alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games projects. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that those involved in the corrupt practices should be punished. He said that his party had already given notice in the Rajya Sabha for a detailed discussion on the issue.Replying to the main question on the bid for Asian Games in 2019, the Minister Dr Gill said the decision to host the event has to be taken after extensive inter-ministerial consultations. He said the decision to bid for a mega sporting event like Asian Games must be based on careful evaluation of the feasibility to hold such games in terms of financial commitments, opportunity costs, administrative arrangements and other logistic and strategic considerations.
