Govt. intervenes only in favour of disadvantaged and weaker sections: Pranab

The Finance Minister sees the Government as an enabler and said that it will intervene only in favour of disadvantaged and weaker sections. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said that the concept of Government as a Mai-Baap is outdated and today citizens will give to each other more and more goods and services in a liberalised economy.<br/><br/>In an exclusive interview to AIR's Special Correspondent, Esther Kar, soon after presenting the budget in Parliament, he admitted that there are serious deficiencies in the delivery mechanism of social services, which needed to be improved in tune with the modern nation. <br/><br/>Explaining the guiding principles of his budget, Mr. Mukherjee said, the first is to ensure that the country reaches a higher growth trajectory after the international financial crisis. The second consideration is to move away from the fiscal expansion towards fiscal consolidation. <br/><br/>He said the third and most important is social inclusive development, which is an article of faith of the UPA Government.
