Govt intends to change Immigration Policy

The government today said that it intends to bring changes in the Immigration Policy. The Overseas Indian Affairs Minister, Vayalar Ravi, said that a Bill in this regard will be brought in Parliament. He was addressing the 5th Annual Conference of Heads of Missions of Gulf Cooperation Council countries in New Delhi. The Indian missions in these countries have also been asked to play a proactive role to see that the problems of the Indian workers are resolved in an effective manner. Referring to the problems being faced by the Indian community based in Gulf countries, the Minister of State for External Affairs, Mrs Praneet Kaur said in her key note address that it is because of archaic systems in these countries as well as India's insufficient policy framework. She said that while the launch of Pravasi Bhartiya Bima Yojana is commendable, there is a need for changes so that the insurance cover could serve the purpose. She said that the Missions should engage the local Indian community to resolve the labour issues and equip the Indian them with correct information. She said the missions can also play an important role in guiding a large number of Indians languishing in several prisons abroad to defend themselves. She said the workers are unable to cope up with legal hassles because of insufficient monetary resources and lack of knowledge about the laws. The two-day conference will deliberate on various issues related to the welfare of the Indian community in these countries.
