The government has said Indian atomic power reactors are the best and the safest in the world. Replying to supplementaries during the question hour in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in the PMO, V. Narayanasamy said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has certified that all the 20 atomic power reactors in the country are very safe. He said the certificate was given by IAEA after inspection by the officials of the Agency along with the officials of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
Referring to the proposed Jaitapur Atomic Power Plant in Maharashtra, Mr Narayanasamy said the government has accorded in principle approval for locating six units of Light Water Reactors each of 1650 MW capacity at Jaitapur in technical cooperation with France. He said the start of work on the first set of twin units is envisaged in the 12th plan.
The Minister informed the House that New Delhi has negotiated with the French government to provide the upgraded reactor for the plant. He said there is no displacement of people at Jaitapur site.
