The government has imposed a moratorium on commercialisation of Bt brinjal till such time independent scientific studies establish that it is safe for the human health and environment. In a written statement in Rajya Sabha, minister of state for environment and forest, Mr. Jairam Ramesh said the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) in consultation with eminent scientists will draw up fresh protocols for specific tests to establish the safety of the Bt. Brinjal.
