The government has imposed ten per cent import duty on wheat. It will remain in force till March next year. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tabled a notification in the Lok Sabha today. It will result in the revenue gain of about 90 crore rupees to the exchequer.

The decision will discourage import of wheat by private traders. At present, there is no import duty on wheat and private traders are importing the grains on lower global prices. Imports are happening despite bumper domestic wheat output in 2014-15 crop year and surplus stocks with the Food Corporation of India (FCI).

The FCI has procured about two hundred 81 lakh tonnes of wheat this year, of which 263 lakh tonnes have been purchased under the relaxed quality norms because the crop got damaged due to unseasonal rains.
