1.9 million tonnes of pulses have been imported in the current fiscal to tide over the shortage of pulses. In the last fiscal, 1.46 million tonne pulses were imported. Food Minister Ramvilas Paswan told the Lok Sabha that imports are primarily undertaken by private traders but during the current year due to high price of pulses, five thousand tonne Tur dal was imported by the government. He said, the imported Tur has been allocated to the States based on their demand. The Food Minister said, rise in the prices of pulses is due to several factors including adverse weather conditions, rise in transportation cost, supply constraints and artificial shortage due to hoarding and black marketing. Recently, the government had undertaken de-hoarding operations and also imposed on stock limits to augment domestic supply.
