The government says the onion price will come down drastically within a week. The government has decided to discourage exports by raising the benchmark price for selling onions by 85 US dollar a tonne. A senior National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) official told AIR that onion minimum export price has been raised to an average of 300 US dollar a tonne with effect from October 6 for the rest of this month. Our corrspondent reports quoting senior officials in the Agriculture ministry that the step to increase the minimum export price of onion has been taken in the wake of rising prices in domestic market. India exported 9.91 lakh tonnes of onions in first half of this fiscal against 9.15 lakh tonnes a year ago.
