Govt has undertaken several prison reform measures: Home Min Shinde

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has said, the government has taken a number of measures to reform prisons in the country. He said, Indian prisons have implemented several innovative initiatives aimed at reformation and rehabilitation of the offenders. Mr Shinde was speaking at the inaugural function of the 6-day Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators in New Delhi today. He said a great emphasis is being given to provide moral and spiritual education to the prisoners in the form of yoga, meditation and art of living.
Mr Shinde told the participants from 20 countries that it is important that activities focusing on vulnerable groups including children, women and prisoners with special needs should be included in the prison reforms. He said the Centre has provided funds under the centrally-sponsored schemes for creating better facilities and more human living conditions.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mullappalli Ramachandran who also addressed the conference, said the fast changing socio-economic scenario has necessitated the need for more effective and progressive reformatory measures.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, R P N Singh said all possible efforts have to be made to ensure that jail inmates come out of prison as better citizens.
