The Cabinet gave its in-principle approval to the proposal of setting up two semiconductor wafer manufacturing facilities in the country.The decision is aimed at checking over-dependence on import of electronic products, especially chipsets.Electronic chips are key components in various gadgets and devices like mobile phones and are crucial both from security as well as foreign exchange outgo point of view, as India has to import most of the electronic components.According to the government's estimates in National Policy of Electronics, the demand for electronics in the country will reach 400 billion dollars by 2020.
