Govt gives in principle approval to Google's Loon project

The government and Google have in-principle agreed to work on Loon project for providing Internet connectivity by using large balloons. Taking to reporters after meeting with Google CEO Sunder Pichai in New Delhi, Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the project will be started on a pilot basis. Mr Prasad said, government is quite open to the idea of loon project to expand Internet connectivity in the country. He informed that BSNL will be partner with the project. Google, under its Project Loon, is using big balloons floating at a height of 20 kilometers above earth surface for transmission of internet services. It has already tested this technology in New Zealand, California and Brazil.<br/><br/> On security issues, the Minister said he has directed the IT secretary to coordinate with the security agencies to expedite the process. The Minister also informed that google will also partner with the Common Service Center, CSC and Internet Sathi programme to expand Internet programme in three lakh villages particularly for women training. The Minister also requested Mr Pichai to partner in the promotion of Indian language digitally.<br/> <br/>Sunder Pichai told reporters that, google will be happy to partner with Common Service Center, CSC along with Internet Sathi programme. He also said the google is focused on bringing google products in many more Indian languages. Earlier, in the day Mr Pichai had announced to provide WiFi access at 100 railway stations in India and plans to hire more engineers for its campus in Hyderabad.
