The Government has finalised a self regulatory mechanism to control the content on Private Television Channels. The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mrs. Ambika Soni informed the Lok Sabha that a regulatory committee headed by a retired Judge will have eminent members from the cross sections of society including broadcasters. The committee will deliver judgement and resolve public complaints. Mrs. Soni said that a committee set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to review the TRP measurement in India had already submitted its report. The committee headed by Dr. Amit Mitra, Secretary General of FICCI had given 15 key recommendations which the government is examining. She said that the Television Ratings Point, TRP system is not foolproof and efforts are on to enhance the people's meters from existing 8,000 to 30,000 for better results. Replying to a supplementary, the Minister said 110 crore rupees have been provided to strengthen transmitters located in bordering areas of Jammu and Kashmir to counter the propaganda put out by the Pakistan Television. Referring to about 11,000 vacancies in Doordarshan, she said 3000 emergency postings will be filled up soon. Mrs. Soni informed that Prasar Bharati has already finalized the recruitment rules and a GoM headed by Home Minister is also seized of the matter. Regarding Direct to Home services DTH, the Minister said the number of such channels will be 200 by next year from the existing 58 channels.
