Govt favours statutory framework on occupational safety, health

Government today favoured a statutory framework on occupational safety and health in workplace across all sectors of industrial activity. Addressing the India-EU seminar on occupational safety and health in New Delhi, Labour and Employment Secretary Mrutyunjay Sarangi said a system of incentives to employers and employees should be developed.
He said that new technologies and their application in workplace should also be studied to analyse their impact on health. Mr. Sarangi said that another area which needs attention is the biological risks arising out of the application of new technologies which can affect workers in many sector ranging from health care, waste management to biotechnology industry.
Talking about the working population in informal sector which lacks proper safety and health, he said this sector needs attention to ensure that safety and health measures are fully integrated with broader employment programmes for them.
Members of the 27 member European Union, ILO representatives, workers and employers representatives both from India and European Union are attending the two-day long seminar.
