The government today expressed hope to surpass last year's record production of wheat in the current year. Replying to supplementaries in Rajya Sabha today, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said that with area under wheat increased in states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, government expects more than 80 million tonnes of wheat. He however added that the target for rice may be missed as paddy has not been sown in 56 lakh hectares due to poor monsoon. <br/> <br/>Stating that the production of food grains overall may be down due to drought during Kharif season in 13 states and subsequent floods in some states, Mr Pawar said that adequate stocks of rice and wheat are available. He added that an amount of 5 thousand crore rupees have been provided to meet the target of increasing the production of rice, wheat and pulses by 20 million tonnes by 2011. <br/> <br/>Spelling out the measure, Mr Pawar said that a draft of the National Food Security Bill has been circulated to state governments to get their views. He said that a meeting of state ministers will be convened soon in this regard. He added that food subsidy of about Rs 60,000 crore has been given to ensure availability of foodgrains to the poor.<br/><br/>
