Govt expects tomato, onion prices to moderate soon

Government today termed the rise in prices of tomatoes and onions as temporary saying the rates will ease soon with arrival of new crops and improvement in supply from rain-hit southern States. Food Ministry has said the marginal increase in the prices of onions and tomatoes is largely due to disruption of supplies from southern States which have witnessed severe rainfall over the last one week. The Ministry said it is closely monitoring the supply and prices of essential commodities in view of supply-demand mismatch and adverse climatic conditions.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Committee on Prices is scheduled to meet tomorrow to review the availability and prices of essential commodities and consider measures to be taken. AIR correspondent reports that tomato prices have shot up to over 60 rupees per kilogram in Delhi from 40 a month ago. Similarly Onion prices are hovering in the range of 40-60 rupees per Kg.
