Govt. examining proposal to include vulnerable sections in BPL category

The government is examining the proposal for the automatic inclusion of vulnerable sections such as the SCs, STs and minorities in the BPL category. The Minister for Rural Development Dr. C.P. Joshi said that those having government jobs and irrigated land could be excluded from the BPL list although the final criteria will be worked out only after getting the national sample survey figures. <br/><br/>Mr. Joshi admitted that many of the deserving people were not getting the facilities provided under the BPL category while many undeserving families are getting the benefits. <br/><br/>Inaugurating the tenth conference of the Social Editors from across the country in New Delhi on Monday Dr. Joshi also admitted that corruption to the tune of over seven crore rupees in the money transaction from Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has been reported. He said that the government is trying to also see how it can resolve the issue of delayed payment to those employed under NREGA. <br/><br/>In this context he said that it is working on the proposal to make the payment of the first seven day of work on the 16th day itself. He also said that 160 crore person days of employment under NREGA had been generated.
