The government has drawn up a roadmap for bringing electoral reforms in the country. Briefing media, the Law Minister Mr. Veerappa Moily said that seven regional consultations will be held from the 5th February next year to be followed by national consultations on the 2nd and 3rd April. The Minister said, these will be structured discussions and the government will try to bring a comprehensive bill within six months after the consultations. Mr. Moily said that a core committee under the chairmanship of Addition Solicitor General Vivek K. Tankha was constituted in October this year to work as a nodal panel for electoral reforms. The committee will prepare a vision document on the issue covering areas to be decided in consultation with the Election Commission. The proposal prepared by the Election Commission on various issues related to electoral reforms were discussed at a meeting held on 15th of last month. The proposals related to criminalisation of politics, funding of elections, conduct of elections, auditing and financing of political parties, review of anti-defection law and adjudication of election petitions.
