The Government has decided to replace all the 122 sluice gates of Farakka Dam in West Bengal with in the next 5 years. Replying to a half and hour discussusion on the Water Leakage from Farakka Dam in Rajya Sabha today, Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said 33 of them will be replaced soon and tender has been floted for this purpose. He shared the concern of the members over the recent collapse of two sluice gates which caused leakage of water to other side.Mr. Bansal said the centre will evolve a plan to increase the capacity of the water channel to facilitate Kalkata port requirements and drinking purposes. He said under the Ganga Water Treaty, Bangladesh gets 35,000 cu secs and India 40 thousand cu secs. Initiating the discussions Debabrata Bandyopadhya of Trinamool Congress demanded setting up a joint monitoring committee comprising representatives of State Government, Central Water Commission and Water Resources Ministry for maintenance of Farakka Dam.
