Govt decides to invite safety review team of IAEA to assist in safety reviews

The government has decided to invite an operational safety review team of the International Automic Energy Agency to assist in its own safety reviews and audit. The decision was taken following the review of safety of nuclear plants in the country by the Cabinet Committee on security, CCS. The Committee noted that technical review has been undertaken of all safety systems of nuclear power plants in the country with a particular focus on their abiiity to withstand the impact of natural desasters such as Tsunamies and earthquakes.

The Committee also noted that mechanism for responding to nuclear and radiological emergencies are being strengthened in co-ordination with the National Desaster Management Authority NDMA. The NDMA has also drawn up various action plans for emergency preparedness. The CCS reiterated that the safety of the nuclear power plants is a matter of highest priority.
